Hyundai Tournament of Champions

Yahoo Expert Fantasy Golf Advice & Predictions

Typically a windy event, the Hyundai Tournament of Champions will start Friday, January 9th and end on Monday, January 12th, 2015. Tee times are typically announced on Wednesday and the field will be set the preceding Friday. Despite a course that should play to the strengths of long hitters like former champion Dustin Johnson (not in attendance), the list of former champions reads much more like average hitters with solid overall games. It’s played at the Plantation course in Kapalua, Maui with the course exposed to the northwest winds that hit the island during the winter. If you’re interested in attending, take a look at THESE AMAZING VACATION RENTAL OPTIONS and plan ahead for next year or find a deal leading up to this year’s event.

Previous Hyundai Tournament of Champions winners include:

  • Zach Johnson (2014)
  • Dustin Johnson (2013)
  • Steve Stricker (2012)
  • Jonathan Byrd (2011)
  • Geoff Ogilvy (2010)
  • Geoff Ogilvy (2009)
  • Daniel Chopra (2008)
  • Vijay Singh (2007)

2015 Yahoo Fantasy Game Advice: Yahoo has done a better job of bolstering the A group this season compared to past years. The A and B groups are very strong while the C group is weaker than normal. Of course, that could change if some players breakout in 2015. We will add our picks in the coming days. Good luck this season!

(A1) Bubba Watson (11) Hero
(1) HSBC
(14) Tour Champ.
(4) 2013
(18) 2012
(25) 2011

Just adopted his 2nd child – hopefully this will help him focus but we can understand if he’s a bit preoccupied with the family. Congrats Bubba! He’s a good wind player, so that could factor in this week.
(A2) J.B. Holmes (28) HSBC
(49) CIMB
(12) BMW PGA
(35) Deutsche Bank

Close call between Holmes, Noh, and Martin for the 2nd A spot this week. This is the topic of our weekly email newsletter (subscribe before it gets distributed on Monday!)
(A3) Seung-Yul Noh (39) CIMB
(23) BMW PGA
(9) Deutsche Bank
(53) Barclays

Steady but not great start to wrap around schedule.
(A4) Ben Martin (MC) OHL
(29) Sand Farm
(17) McGladrey
(1) Shriners Hospitals

After a victory at the Shriners and two other good starts, he missed the cut in Mayakoba. Hard to know what to expect here.

Recent Finishes
Tourn. History
(B1) Matt Kuchar (8) Hero
(22) McGladrey
(21) Frys.com Open
(13) Tour Champ.
(6) 2014
(9) 2013
(6) 2011
(3) 2010

Kuchar has been steady with top 10 finishes in Kapalua in his last four tries. He’s the horse for the course this week and a very good wind player.
(B2) Jason Day (5) Hero
(4) Tour Champ.
(67) BMW PGA
(7) Deutsche Bank
(9) 2011

Top 10 at Kapalua in 2011 + 5th at the Hero World Challenge and 4th at the Tour Championship. He’s definitely a player on the rise.
(B3) Chris Kirk (16) Hero
(14) HSBC
(48) BMW Masters
(4) McGladrey
(16) 2014
(7) 2012

Third time to play the TOC. 2nd best horse for the course this week, though we’d argue that with the exception of Kuchar, no one has a great track record here.
(B4) Hideki Matsuyama (13) Hero
(41) HSBC
(21) CIMB
(10) Shriners Hospitals

Continues his consistently good play and solid in the wind. 1st time here. Won the Dunlop Phoenix (Japan Tour) tournament in a playoff in November 2014. Could be a big year for Matsuyama.
(B5) Zach Johnson (8) Hero
(MC) McGladrey
(21) Tour Champ.
(43) BMW PGA
(1) 2014
(18) 2013
(23) 2011
(18) 2010

Defending champion and solid wind player, but he started off 2014 with a bang and his recent play points to a more modest start in 2015. Before his win at Kapalua, he had an 18th, 23rd, and 18th place finish.
(B6) Hunter Mahan (17) Hero
(28) HSBC
(3) Frys.com Open
(23) Tour Champ.
(26) 2013
(25) 2011

Been playing reasonably well but has bad track record at Kapalua.

(C1) Patrick Reed (3) Hero
(22) HSBC
(26) CIMB
(19) Tour Champ.
(16) 2014

3rd place finish at the Hero World Challenge. Two top 30s before that. He’s always a threat to win but has more volatility than the other top players.
(C2) Ryan Moore (28) HSBC
(1) CIMB
(MC) Shriners Hospitals
(50) BMW PGA
(10) 2014
(28) 2013
(6) 2010

Victory at CIMB provides nice momentum + two top 10 finishes here in his last three tries.
(C3) Robert Streb (37) OHL
(8) Sand Farm
(1) McGladrey
(10) Shriners Hospitals

Slipped a bit after his victory at the McGladrey, but had three top 10s in his last four.
(C4) Tim Clark (7) Nedbank
(2) HSBC
(56) CIMB
(42) Shriners Hospitals
(17) 2011

Stayed hot with his 7th place finish at the Nedbank Challenge in his home country of South Africa.
