The 2014 Fedex St. Jude Classic

Previous St. Jude Classic champions include: Harris English (2013), Dustin Johnson (2012), Harrison Frazar (2011), Lee Westwood (2010), Brian Gay (2009), Justin Leonard (2008, 2005), Woody Austin (2007), Jeff Maggert (2006), David Toms (2004, 2003), and Len Mattiace (2002). The U.S. Open is almost here, and now we know that Tiger won’t be playing. Most pros are heading to Pinehurst to get a head start on their Major preparations, but the rest are in Memphis chasing coveted Fedex points. Previous champions have been a mix of young, up and comers and older, wily veterans. The TPC Southwind measures 7,244 yards is another par 70, like the two courses in the DFW metroplex, so players who feast on par 5s will have a tougher time without their two-putt birdie advantage this week. However, the past 3 winners have been long knockers: English, D. Johnson, and Frazar; however, Leonard, Maggert and Toms were all straighter, shorter hitters.

Round 4 Notes
  • Weather: They can’t catch a break this weekend. Let’s hope the U.S. Open is better. Low winds expected for Sunday and low chances of rain – we’ll believe it when we see it.
  • Rationale: Only one A and C group option left, so they’re no brainers. We’ll preserve our Zach Johnson start and hope DJ can get his act together in round 3.5 and 4.
  • Note: Yahoo has a poor way of responding to the awkward lineup changes required when there is a delay that pushes one round into the next day. The same will happen on Sunday. You either need to adjust your team the night before and GUESS who may be the most likely player to make the cut which could be difficult, or you have a short period of time starting when the PGA publishes the next round’s tee times and ending 5 minutes before the first player tees off. Today, this window was extremely short, so a lot of teams got stuck with players who missed the cut.

Comments
(A) Lee Westwood (35) BMW PGA Champ.
(6) Players
(MC) Wells Fargo
(1) Malaysian Open
(11) 2011
(1) 2010
Lee has been playing better the past few months, and his two most recent attempts at St. Jude resulted in a 1st and 11th place finish. With a weak Group A field, Westwood is a solid choice to score another top 20 this week.
(A) Phil Mickelson (49) Memorial
(MC) Players
(11) Wells Fargo
(MC) Masters
(2) 2013
(59) 2009
Yet another update, as Matt Kuchar has withdrawn just about as quickly as he entered. We’ve done a more thorough review and think Phil could help our your team a little more than Howell III this week given his 2013 performance and the fact he tends to peak before a major. Others to consider: #3 Charles Howell III, #4 Kevin Stadler, #5 Patrick Reed, #6 Russell Henley, #7 Josh Teater
(B) Dustin Johnson (46) Memorial
(14) Colonial
(7) Byron Nelson
(59) Players
(10) 2013
(1) 2012
While Dustin hasn’t been on top of the leaderboard recently, he is still a steady option with a great track record at the St. Jude Classic.
(B) Zach Johnson (73) Colonial
(26) Players
(14) Wells Fargo
(61) RBC
(MC) 2012
(32) 2011
(12) 2010
While Zach hasn’t played anywhere near his early season level, he has a nice history at St. Jude and is one of a few of the elite players teeing it up this week. We’ll probably keep him on the bench and see how he performs on Thursday and Friday, given his mediocre recent fantasy performance.
(B) Ian Poulter (26) BMW PGA Champ.
(65) Players
(5) Volvo
(20) Masters
(51) 2013
(MC) 2010
Poulter catapults into our lineup due to Jacobson’s poor final round at the Memorial. Ian has had four solid tournaments in a row, so he’ll be ready to make up for two poor finishes at St. Jude in the past.
(B) David Hearn (29) Memorial
(21) Colonial
(6) Players
(44) Wells Fargo
(18) 2013
(42) 2012
(47) 2011
It’s a tight one between David Hearn and Ian Poulter, with Hearn playing a little better than Poulter recently and more often as well. Others to consider: #5 Robert Garrigus, #6 Freddie Jacobson, #7 Michael Thompson, #8 Martin Flores, #9 Billy Horschel, #10 David Lingmerth
(C) John Senden (5) Colonial
(11) Byron Nelson
(26) Players
(29) Zurich
(69) 2011
(37) 2010
(4) 2009
You have to like Senden’s week-to-week improvement lately, steadily improving from 29th to 5th over four weeks.
(C) Ryan Palmer (5) Colonial
(22) Byron Nelson
(59) Players
(MC) Zurich
(4) 2013
(3) 2012
(MC) 2010
Ryan has started to turn it on again over his last two events after a disappointed mid-season stretch, and given his two top 5’s over the past two years at St. Jude, we’ll take him over the host of quality C group players. Others to consider: #3 Graeme McDowell, #4 Paul Casey, #5 Charley Hoffman, #6 Retief Goosen, #7 David Toms, #8 Harris English
