The Barclays Recap: We’ve gained 150 spots in the rankings this week, thanks to Adam Scott. What turned out to be a good first two days was turned upside down by a bad Saturday for Stenson, erasing much of the first two day’s gains. However, Adam Scott came through with a 5-under 66 on the final day to essentially get handed a tournament where the likes of Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar, and a long list of others played liked they didn’t want to win. Crazy Sunday in the first week of the Fedex Cup playoffs. Now for our Deutsche Bank Championship Picks: Group A: - Phil Mickelson (it’s finally Phil time! after the US Open, he had his fair share of problems, but he finished strong at the Barclays and has a good track record in big events and at TPC Boston) - Rory McIlroy (former Deutsche Bank champion; had three solid starts in a row; time for him to live up to his billing as one of the best in the game) Others to consider: Tiger Woods status for this week’s tournament has to be questionable given the back pain he was in during the last several holes of the Barclays. Brandt Snedeker has been piling up the MCs, so we’re hesitant to put him in this week. Perhaps Bill Haas (playing consistent golf) or Jason Dufner (who has finally settled down after his major championship).
Group B: - Steve Stricker (2 top 10′s and 1 victory at TPC Boston; 8th, 10th, 13th, 12th in his last four starts this year with big competition; he should anchor your team with solid rounds all week but may not win) - Jim Furyk (3 top 10′s at the Deutsche Bank; 9th, 9th, 2nd, 6th in his last four starts – how can you not put him in your lineup this week?) - Zach Johnson (has never really performed at his best at TPC Boston, but he’s fresh off a week of rest and finished 6th, 4th, 8th and 5th the past four tournaments; plus he didn’t have to withstand the crazy Sunday at the Barclays) - Justin Rose (can’t believe he three-putted the 18th at the Barclays to finish T-2nd; we think he’s got the game right now to contend and should have the confidence; let’s see if he can get back in there this week) Others to consider: Dustin Johnson has a decent track record at TPC Boston but he’s been too hit and miss for us to start him this week; Luke Donald has not played well lately but has two good finishes in the DB Championship; Webb Simpson – we’re just a little tired of rolling him out there and not getting top 10s; he’s a former champion at TPC Boston, so it was either him or Rose.
Group C: - Adam Scott (won’t be overwhelmed by his win this week as it was virtually handed to him in the clubhouse – gift wrapped and signed by some of the best players in the game; 3 Top 10s at TPC Boston; potential to win back-to-back) - Jason Day (can’t seem to put it all together but has good memories at TPC Boston; might break through again this week) Others to consider: Henrik Stenson (we will reevaluate him later this week; virtually disappeared after a great first round at the Barclays); suspect it was a fluke given how well he’s been playing
